Prevention is better than Cure

Loc Loss

COPING WITH AND PREVENTING THE LOSS OF LOCS

Be Consistent

Stick to your retightening schedule

Making sure to stick to your retightening schedule is vital for preventing loc loss.  The inability to do so can lead to weakened roots due to the weight of the loc strand on the regrowth and result in losing the entire loc from the root.

Shedding of hair is a normal part of the hair growth cycle, however, if the locs are not regularly secured to the new growth, the amount of hair securing the loc to the scalp may shed and also result in loc loss.

Be Gentle

Handle your locs with care

Styling your hair in order to look good is something most, if not all, of us like to do. And style away. Make yourself look great. But please remember to handle your locs with care. Be gentle when you are styling your hair, by not pulling so hard on your locs, placing too much tension to the base of the locs (like when doing ponytails and braiding your locs), as this can cause loss of locs known as traction alopecia, which can be permanent.

Find Your Balance

Protein Balance

Please ensure that you are taking in enough protein within your diet.  As hair is the final destination for protein, it is so easy for the hair to lack a sufficient amount that will keep it healthy and strong. Without sufficient intake, locs will begin to thin and weaken and can therefore result in loc loss.

If you find thinning of locs strands or roots and you are not placing tension on locs during styling, you may need to increase your protein intake to rebuild and restrengthen loc strands.

Protein treatments such as our Balancing Loc Treatment Solution or the DIY Loc Strengthening Treatment can also be used to help replenish, repair and restore protein balance within the loc strands.  For best results, protein should be taken internally and applied externally.

pH Balance

To maintain optimal hair and scalp health, it is important to sustain a balanced pH.

Unbalanced pH can cause loosening of the scalp pores and opening of loc cuticles, resulting in dull dry brittle locs and eventual loc loss.

Make sure to use specially formulated pH-balanced products such as those within our Scalp Care Range, however, in the case of a felt emergency you can use the DIY Pre-shampoo Vinegar Rinse or do the DIY Bentonite Clay Treatment to restore a healthy pH balance.

Hormonal Balance

Stress can be a culprit to hormonal imbalance, which can cause weakening of loc roots and strands and result in loc loss.  whilst it may not be easy to change your circumstances, it can be advised that an intake of hormone-balancing herbs or supplements can be a way to re-balance hormones.

Products like our Invigorating Scalp Serum and Invigorating Scalp Oil can also help relieve loc and scalp symptoms.

However, we recommend that you seek professional medical advice if you are experiencing severe hormonal imbalances.

Please speak with your microlocs consultants if you are concerned about any of the above for added guidance and support.
