Hot Oil Treatments

Strengthen, Reduce Frizz, Add Softness and Shine

For Mature Locs

Hot oil treatments are a great way to boost the health of your microlocs without resorting to creamy conditioners that can cause build-up and dull looking locs.

Choosing Your Oil

We recommend using a medium weight oil such as Olive, Avocado, Sunflower, Baobab, Hemp, Jojoba and Macadamia Oils, as these are light enough to absorb into the loc but weighty enough to loc in moisture and soften the locs.

If you feel your locs are extra dry, you can mix in some Castor oil to your oil of choice to make it heavier and loc in more moisture.

If you want a loc strengthening Oil Treatment, you can mix in some Coconut Oil to your oil of choice to add extra protein to your locs (we don't recommend using only Coconut Oil, as it has a tendency to make locs too stiff).

What To Do

  • Shampoo microlocs as usual with our Aloe & Peppermint Clarifying Loc Shampoo.

  • Towel dry locs until damp but not dripping (we recommend using a microfiber towel, as this is excellent for soaking up moisture without leaving towel fibres in your locs).

  • Gently warm your oil or mix of oils over a pan of simmering water until it's warm to the touch.

  • Section locs into 4 and apply the warm oil to your locs from the tips all the way to the roots and scalp (working in sections ensures even coverage). The tips of your locs are the oldest and require the most attention.

  • Cover with a plastic cap (or bag) and leave on for 30 minutes to an hour. Or sit under a hooded dryer for 10-15 minutes, then allow locs to cool down.

  • Rinse locs thoroughly (for at least 5 minutes) with warm water to help remove residual oil from the locs.

  • If you feel your locs are still too oily after rinsing, or you used a heavier treatment, you can dilute a small amount of shampoo in a jug of warm water, pour it over your locs and massage the soapy water into your locs to further remove any oily residue without overly stripping your locs of all that lovely oil and its benefits. Rinse well.

  • Dry and style as usual

How Often To Use

We do NOT recommend using this treatment on baby locs as it will cause your microlocs to slip and unravel. From 6 months to 1 year (depending on how quickly your locs have settled), you can use this treatment every 2-3 months or as needed. Try timing this treatment so it falls on your retightening day, so your micro-interloctition can repair any slippage straight away to maintain the integrity of your locs.
