JOURNEY towards a Healthy Scalp

Healthy Scalp Maintenance

Normal Scalp Care

  • Shampooing your hair regularly with our Aloe & Peppermint Clarifying Loc Shampoo is a great way of encouraging and maintaining a healthy scalp. We advise shampooing locs fortnightly, however finding a regular routine that works best for you is recommended as this will enable consistency.

  • We advise thorough massaging of the scalp when shampooing, to help remove dirt, build-up and dead skin cells from the scalp. This will encourage follicle stimulation for hair growth and natural scalp sebum release, which can help alleviate dry scalp.

  • We also encourage regular spraying of the scalp with water-based products, such as our Rose Hydrating Loc Spray if in the baby loc stage, or a water and light oil mixed-based product, such as our Bi-Phase Moisturising Loc Spray, to help seal moisture into the scalp without causing heavy build-up if locs are mature.

  • In addition to this, we recommend the use of a light oil/or a mixture of light oils such as our specially formulated Healthy Scalp Oil / Sensitive Scalp Version or oils such as safflower oil, sweet almond oil etc, to base the scalp without forming heavy build-up post-wash or as often as you need to.

Dry Scalp Care

A normal, healthy scalp tends to look like a healthy flesh tone colour, similar to your overall complexion, sometimes a little lighter. A dry scalp looks almost white in appearance and can be accompanied by light flaking and/or mild itching. Many tend to experience a dryer scalp during colder weather. If you find yourself experiencing a dry scalp after following our Healthy Scalp Care recommendations above, we recommend including an Aloe-based gel or serum, such as our Aloe + HA Soothing Scalp Serum, which increases scalp hydration without excessive build-up, as well as upping your scalp moisturising routine. So instead of only oiling your scalp post-wash, try oiling your scalp 2-3 times a week after using your water-based hydrating spray and serum to help lock in more moisture. Make sure to use a Vinegar Pre-Cleansing Treatment to help remove any light build-up that may come as a result of using more oils in your routine. We also recommend including the Exfoliating Scalp Pre-Treatment into your wash routine to help remove dead skin cells and flakes and keep your scalp clear and decongested.

Itchy Scalp Care

If you are suffering from severe itching and flaking of the scalp, you may be experiencing dandruff. We recommend using our Exfoliating Scalp Treatment before every wash and switching your regular shampoo to a medicated anti-dandruff shampoo to help target the cause of the issue. We also recommend following the Dry Scalp Care advice above but using our Calming Scalp Spray and Calming Scalp Oil in place of your regular scalp care products to help alleviate the symptoms.
