Baby Microloc Maintenance Tips

Taking care of your baby locs for the first 6 months to 1 year ofter install

Day Care Routine

  • Lightly mist Locs and Scalp once per week, or as recommended by your loctition, with a water-based spray such as our Rose Hydrating Loc Spray

  • Use a light oil like our Healthy Scalp Oil on the scalp sparingly if experiencing a dry scalp (preferably after washing to minimise loc slippage)

Night Time Routine

  • Braid locs in sections, making sure to keep it loose at the roots to prevent hair loss

  • Cover head and locs with a satin bonnet/du-rag/scarf to reduce dryness, lint build-up and breakage

Wash Day Routine

  • Wash locs 4 weeks post-installation just before your retightening session*, and every recurring 4 weeks for the first 6 months with a clarifying shampoo such as our Aloe & Peppermint Clarifying Shampoo to prevent build-up and keep locs and scalp clean and healthy. (*Washing just before your retightening session ensures any slippage is repaired promptly)

  • Once your locs begin to settle (from 6 months onwards) and your retightening schedule has been appropriately adjusted and confirmed, we recommend adding a mid-schedule wash into your routine. e.g., if your retightening schedule is updated to 6 weeks, you wash your locs 3 weeks after retightening and then again on retightening day

  • Loosely braid locs in small sections, fold tips and band the ends with small elastic bands.

  • TWIST BABY-LOCS ONLY- Loosely twist locs in small sections instead, before folding and banding tips

  • Wet locs thoroughly.

  • Apply cleansing shampoo and massage into scalp and gently squeeze through loc braids.

  • Rinse well and repeat the shampoo process if needed.

  • Thoroughly rinse well to remove all traces of shampoo.

  • Towel dry locs, preferably with a microfibre towel.

  • It's important to detangle your loc strands post-wash, as they can clump together.  Remove bands and unbraid locs to detangle by gently separating loc strands to the base of the loc. This will allow the locs to remain separate for both styling and retightening.

  • Oil scalp with Healthy Scalp Oil if needed

  • Re-braid hair in tighter braids, keeping it loose at the root, to prevent bunching, over-expanding of the loc ends and to shape the loc and minimise frizzing (Key Step).

  • If locs are too short to braid, cover with a stocking cap before shampooing to reduce slippage and frizzing.

Leisure Activity Routine

  • Braid and band locs before gym or high impact activities

  • Allow locs to fully dry before releasing the braids

  • If swimming, braid or cornrow locs and band ends making sure to cover with a swimming cap to prevent chlorine saturation

  • Rinse locs thoroughly after swimming to remove any chlorine deposits

  • unbraid, detangle and tightly re-braid, keeping it loose at the base

  • Allow locs to fully dry before releasing the braids

Cautions

  • Don't use any hair dyes until your locs are mature. Your inter-loctition will inform you when they feel it's safe to do so.

  • Never take down your braids before your locs are fully dry, as this will lead to loc shrinkage, loc bunching and an overall uneven mature loc strand.

  • Don't apply oil or grease to the loc strands until locs are mature, as this can cause slippage.

  • No creamy conditioners at all, ever! This will cause loc slippage in its baby phase, prolonging the locking process, as well as cause unnecessary build-up in the locs which can be difficult to remove. Conditioners can also cause the locs to become too soft and limp during the mature phase which can affect the durability of curly styles.
